Who We Are

Alec Mackenzie, P.E.

Alec founded Mackenzie Design in 2007 while still attending college at Maine Maritime Academy. In 2008 he graduated with degrees in Marine Systems Engineering and Marine Engineering Operations.  In 2014 he obtained a Master in Business Administration degree from Babson College’s F.W. Olin School of Business – the #1 ranked business school for Entrepreneurship.  Alec is also a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Maine.

Alec excels at combining the mechanical, the electrical and the programmatic into simple, elegant solutions. He performs most of the mechanical systems analysis, electrical control design and LabVIEW programming. Not afraid to tackle problems with a tall learning curve, he’s known for relentlessly hammering on project until its done right.

When not in the office, you’ll likely find Alec in remote areas of New England camping next to his adventure motorcycle or snowboarding.

Justin Henderson

Justin moved to Portland from Houlton, Maine in 2009.  He studied Marine Systems Engineering and Marine Engineering Operations at Maine Maritime Academy and proceeded to cut his teeth in the maritime industry while working on unique government-leased vessels as a civilian in cooperation with military personnel.

Justin filled his passport with visas while working in a number of other maritime sectors, including offshore Oil & Gas exploratory drilling. He most recently served as the Head of the Engineering, Mechanical, Electrical, and Welding Departments aboard an offshore drilling platform operating in Brazilian waters, which led him to earn a Chief Engineer license with the U.S. Coast Guard as well as a working proficiency in the Portuguese language. His time in the Oil & Gas industry has left him with a unique and diverse knowledge of diesel-electric power plants, shipboard automation, centrifuges, salt water distillation, heat exchangers, and HVAC/R Systems. Justin also specializes in mechanical systems design, predictive/preventative maintenance, and enjoys working with AutoCAD.

In his free time, you will find Justin snowboard racing for Team Yosaku on the slopes of Shawnee Peak or aboard his boat on Casco Bay with his wife Gretchen, their rescue dog Bandit the Brittany, and their water loving friends and family.
